Speed is often a contributing factor in fatal car accidents

Speeding, a lot of people do it without a second thought. No one wants to believe that their actions behind the wheel will cause harm to anyone else. Sadly, speeding, something some would regard as a harmless act, is the cause of numerous fatal car accidents every year in New York and across the country.

According to a recently published article, 22% of all fatal car accidents in the United States result from speeding. Out of all 50 states and the District of Columbia, New York ranks 16th highest for the number of speed-related fatal auto collisions. Data collected from local resources and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that 20.9% of all deadly accidents here are caused by those who drive faster than the posted limits.

Is this news? Not really. It is easy to see that speeding is a problem in this state. Statistics are often shared with the public in the hopes of opening peoples’ eyes to the issue so that change can occur. Sadly, even with public education on the matter, speeding is and will probably always be an issue.

As it currently stands, laws in New York and across the country deem speeding an act of negligence. This means that those who lose loved ones in fatal car accidents in which speeding was a contributing factor may seek compensation for their losses through legal means. Wrongful death claims that are filed in civil court and successfully negotiated or litigated may result in victims’ families achieving maximum relief.
