Police in New York are in the process of investigating a crash that left a cyclist dead. This fatal accident occurred Sept. 21, a little before 2 p.m., in Queens. This is the 21st fatal accident involving a cyclist to happen this year on city streets. What makes this event particularly sad is that the victim was a young teen.
According to a news report, a 14-year-old male was riding his bike near the Pulaski Bridge when he was struck by a commercially owned and operated truck. The driver — a 33-year-old male — said he felt a bump as he was passing under the bridge. He stopped and assistance was called for immediately. Sadly, the victim died at the scene of the accident.
The driver is understandably upset by this incident. His employer claims he was not at fault, but only time will tell what actually caused this accident to happen. As of the latest report, no charges have been filed against the truck driver. It is unclear if any charges are pending.
This tragic event has affected a number of individuals. The premature death of a child is something many people in New York and elsewhere would struggle to cope with mentally and financially. Funeral expenses are prohibitive, and the financial burden is something the victim’s family should not have to shoulder alone. If the driver is found even partially responsible for this fatal accident, the victim’s family may be able to seek compensation for their losses successfully. Legal counsel can review this case and assist the victim’s loved ones in pursuing civil actions in an effort to seek relief, if doing so is deemed appropriate.
