Two teenagers have been badly hurt and one man is dead after a single-car accident in Brooklyn, according to local police. The fatal accident took place around 4:30 p.m. on the afternoon of April 2. Charges have not been filed, as the driver perished in the accident, but a New York police investigation into the cause of the crash is still underway as of this report.
According to authorities, a vehicle carrying at least two individuals, a 19-year-old male and a 16-year-old male, was headed northbound on King’s Highway when the accident took place. For reasons that have not been clearly determined, the vehicle entered a divider between the main roadway from a service road. There, it struck a tree head-on, causing serious damage to the car.
The 16-year old was rushed to a local hospital with severe body trauma. He is listed as being in critical condition. One 19-year-old male was taken in with injuries described as minor, while another 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. It is unclear whether both individuals were in the car at the time of the crash, and it is also unclear who was driving.
Depending on the outcome of the New York police investigation, if the driver survived the fatal accident, he could face criminal charges for his role in the crash. However, even if the driver perished or is not criminally charged, the family of the deceased and the injured parties are still afforded legal recourse. Wrongful death and personal injury suits can be filed through a civil court, presuming sufficient evidence of the driver’s material contribution to the crash exists and can be presented to the court.
