Fatal motorcycle accident leaves 1 dead,1 injured

Police in upstate New York are investigating a crash that left one person dead and another individual with serious injuries. The fatal motorcycle accident occurred on Sunday, May 27, in Hounsfield. Investigators say that the driver responsible claims to have not seen the motorcycle coming.

According to reports, at approximately 12:20 p.m., the driver of an SUV — a 44-year-old woman — stopped at a stop sign and then proceeded into an intersection, right into the path of a motorcycle coming west on Route 3. The motorcyclist had no time to stop and struck the passenger side of the SUV. The motorcycle driver — a 52-year-old male — and his passenger — a 52-year-old female — were both thrown from the vehicle. Both victims were transported to medical facilities for treatment. The male victim was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital, while the female victim was admitted in serious condition.

The driver of the SUV was uninjured in the wreck. By all accounts, she seems to be cooperating with police. Charges have not been filed against this individual. As this matter is still under investigation, it is unclear if any charges will be filed in this case.

This fatal motorcycle accident is like so many other collisions seen in New York involving motorcycles. Too many drivers fail to see motorcyclists coming, which leads to collisions that result in death and/or injury. In this particular case, if the driver responsible for the crash is thought to have been negligent in her actions, the surviving family members of the deceased and the injured victim may pursue civil claims in court in an effort to seek compensation for their losses. While taking legal action cannot change what has been done, if successful, the damages awarded can help the surviving victim and the loved ones of the deceased as they strive to move past this tragic event.
