Pedestrians in New York are typically aware of their vulnerability when they cross busy streets. However, most would likely not consider walking on the sidewalk to be life-threatening. In a shocking pedestrian accident in Queens, three pedestrians, including a small child, were struck by a car while they were walking on the sidewalk.
According to the New York Police Department, an SUV that was driven by a 43-year-old woman disregarded a red traffic light. Another car that entered the intersection at that moment smashed into the SUV. The impact of the collision sent the SUV careening onto the sidewalk. Two women and a toddler could not get out of the way of the approaching SUV, and they were struck by it.
The 2-year-old child was critically injured and rushed to a hospital from where she was later transferred to another medical center. Her 48-year-old mother and the drivers of both vehicles were taken to hospitals for treatment of their injuries and are reportedly all stable. Sadly, a 52-year-old relative of the mother and child passed away after being admitted to the hospital.
Pedestrians who are fortunate enough to survive being struck by a negligent driver may have suffered life-changing injuries that might have long-term financial consequences. When a family loses a loved one in a pedestrian accident, the unexpected costs associated with end-of-life arrangements can be overwhelming. Fortunately, financial relief may be pursued by filing personal injury or wrongful death claims in a New York civil court. With evidence of negligence by other parties, a monetary judgment may be entered to cover documented financial losses sustained.
