Law enforcement officers in New York are in the process of investigating a pedestrian accident involving a U.S. Postal Service vehicle. On the evening of May 3, a 52-year-old male was struck down by a USPS truck while crossing a street in Brooklyn. Sadly, the injuries suffered due to this truck accident victim proved fatal.
Video of the accident shows the victim in a crosswalk at the intersection of Howard Avenue and MacDougal Street. It shows the driver of the USPS truck come to a stop and then proceeded to move again right as the victim was crossing in front of the vehicle. Sadly, the victim suffered critical injuries and died at the scene of the accident before he could be transported for medical care.
The driver did remain at the scene and is said to be cooperating with authorities. USPS has also issued a statement saying it is assisting authorities with this investigation. As of the latest report, no charges have been filed in this case. Investigators have not indicated if any charges are pending against the driver.
This entire situation is heartbreaking, but what makes it worse is that the victim is survived by two little girls — 5-year-old twins. They are now in the care of their aunt. The financial and emotional consequences this will have on them and their new caregiver will undoubtedly be significant. According to the laws of New York, following a fatal truck accident, the surviving family members of the victim may be entitled to seek compensation for monetary damages incurred. Through negotiations or litigation, maximum relief may be achieved.
