Auto collisions caused by impaired drivers occur all too frequently in the state of New York. According to a recently published article, two counties see the most DUI-related crashes every year: Kings and Suffolk counties. How bad is it in these areas and why?
Suffolk County ranks highest in the state for the number of alcohol- or drug-related collisions. In 2018, there were a total of 470 such accidents that resulted in injury or death in that area. Kings County ranks second highest with 405 DUI-related crashes that resulted in injury or fatality in the year 2018.
In Suffolk County, tourism is believed to play a big part in the problem. In Kings County, however, there does not seem to be one specific thing that is causing the high number of DUI-related crashes. At the end of the day, such incidents are preventable. Whether people are visiting the state on vacation or are residents, it is a conscious choice to drink and drive. The only way to stop these accidents is for people to choose not to operate their vehicles after consuming impairing substances.
DUI-related crashes often have devastating results. Those who have lost loved ones or suffered injuries in collisions with impaired drivers may be entitled to seek compensation for their losses. The state of New York allows victims or — in the event of fatality — their surviving family members to file civil actions against all parties believed responsible. With the assistance of counsel, it may be possible to achieve maximum relief for any damages sustained, whether they are economic or non-economic in nature. This may be accomplished through negotiation or, if necessary, litigation.
