At the end of March, police in New York were called to the scene of a fatal crash. This incident occurred on the Long Island Expressway and involved a total of four automobiles. One person was killed in the wreck and eight others — including the driver responsible — suffered injuries. Authorities believe that impaired driving contributed to this event.
According to a recent news report, at approximately 3:30 p.m. on March 31, the driver of a pickup truck collided with a minivan in the westbound lanes. The force of impact sent the pickup across the median and into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lane. There the truck struck a motorcycle and another minivan. The deceased victim was a passenger in one of the vans. The six surviving victims have injuries that range in severity from critical to non life-threatening.
The individual thought responsible for the collision is a 37-year-old male. He has since been charged with DUI drugs, drug possession and operating a vehicle without a license. Court dates regarding his matter have not been released to the public.
The sad reality of impaired driving, whether it involves drugs or alcohol, is that it happens far too often in New York and elsewhere. Because of one man’s choice to get high and get behind the wheel of a car, one life has been lost and the lives of six others turned upside down. The victims in this particular case — including the family members of the deceased victim — may have legal recourse. With the assistance of an experienced attorney, maximum compensation can be sought by filing and fighting the appropriate claims in civil court.
