Crosswalks are put in place in order for pedestrians to have safer areas to cross streets. However, some drivers may not always take precautions when traveling through areas with crosswalks. As a result, individuals could be involved in a pedestrian accident, and there is a chance that loss of life could occur.
It was reported that such an incident recently took place in New York. A woman was walking in a crosswalk when she was struck by a turning vehicle. The accident took place around 3 pm, and emergency crews arrived at the scene after a 911 call was made. At that time, the woman was found unconscious in the street. The driver of the car was reported as being a 48-year-old individual.
The injured pedestrian was taken to an area hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries and was declared dead. She was reported as being 73 years old. The driver of the car was taken into custody and is facing charges for failure to exercise due care and failure to yield to a pedestrian. Authorities are likely still assessing the situation.
If the family of this pedestrian accident victim wishes to seek compensation, filing a civil claim may be warranted. A wrongful death claim could allow them to work toward restitution for their emotional and financial challenges as well as any other damages permitted under New York law. If interested, these individuals may find consulting with an experienced attorney useful in order to find out more information on the proceedings for a civil lawsuit.
