New York fireman driving under the influence injures 2

Several agencies are entrusted with keeping our communities safe. Unfortunately, those called to serve and protect do not always live up to that commitment. Recently, a New York firefighter suspected of driving under the influence caused a serious pedestrian accident that left two victims injured.

An off-duty fireman in New York was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol when he struck two women as they attempted to cross the street. The victims, one of which was seven months pregnant, were rushed to an area hospital for treatment. The women suffered neck and back injuries but are said to be stable. Thankfully, the baby was successfully delivered and is doing well.

The driver, a 10-year veteran of the fire department, was arrested and charged with refusing to take a Breathalyzer test and driving while intoxicated. The man was reportedly arrested on similar charges in 2010 after he was involved in a minor accident that also led to a physical altercation with the driver of a cab. According to a spokeswoman for the department, he is currently suspended without pay.

In addition to the criminal charges already filed for driving under the influence, the injured victims may also elect to file personal injury claims against the driver in civil court. Under New York law, accident victims reserve the right to seek restitution for financial losses suffered due to another party’s negligence. Unexpected medical expenses as well as other damages often leave victims in a difficult financial position. A successful personal injury claim may provide those injured with much-needed assistance in their financial recovery, allowing them to focus primarily on healing physically.
