In a recent blog post, we talked about the dangers of texting while driving. The texting while driving issue is not necessarily new, but the ideas to solve it keep evolving. Hopefully someday soon, we will have some protocol, method or device that prevents texting while driving altogether. Until then, we have to rely on the laws that are in place now — and the hope that people show some sense — to prevent distracted driving accidents that relate to a cell phone.
New York has had a law on the books since 2009 that bans the use of electronic devices while operating a vehicle. “Use” has many meanings here; but the gist of the law is simple: don’t do it. A texting driver will be subject to a fine and a 5-point deduction on their license. They can also be held liable in a civil lawsuit if they get into an accident. The victim could sue for medical bills, property damage and/or pain and suffering.
As if we needed another reminder of how dangerous distracted driving is, though, someone decided to release a minimalist video game called “SMS Racer.” The game challenges the user to make it around a race track as fast as possible.
However, that isn’t your only task. While driving, you will be frequently pestered by a cell phone that pops up on screen. You have to respond to text messages quickly (within 10 seconds) otherwise your lap time doesn’t count. The point of the game is to show how disruptive texting is when you are behind the wheel.
